A four-hour drive along the Colombo-Katunayake Highway to Negombo and via Puttalama will take you to Anuradhapura. If you take the Colombo – Kandy road, turning from Ambepussa via Kurunegala it will take longer if you stop at the various tourist attractions along the way, such as the Sigiriya Rock Fortress and the Dambulla Rock Temple. The historic city of Polonnaruwa is also accessible en route, while elephant safaris can also be arranged at Habarana. There are excellent hotels at Habarana for an overnight stay, and jeep trips to nearby National Parks are available.
