The Eagles’ Golf Links was the venue of the Mercedes Trophy Sri Lanka Country Finals - 2013 held on Saturday, 29th June 2013.
The tournament, played under the Stableford format in four handicap groups (0-12, 13-20 and 21-24 for men and max 36 for ladies), was open to all and started off under shotgun at 0700AM with the participation of sixty five enthusiastic and prominent golfers that included Niloo Jayatilake, Suwaneetha Selvaratnam and Usha De Silva in the Ladies’ Division and Kushal Johnpillai, Bandula Weerasinghe, Captain Damindra Fernando, Maj Gen Srinath Rajapakse, Arjun Fernando, Sidath Wettimuny, Anel De Silva and Amal Cabraal in the Men’s Division. The Chief of Staff of the Air Force, Air Vice Marshal Kolitha Gunatilleke and the Chairman of Air Force Golf, Air Vice Marshal Kapila Jayampathy, also played in the tournament.
The Winner and 1st Runner up of each men’s handicap group qualified for the Mercedes Trophy Asian Finals to be held at the Hyatt Regency, Sanctuary Cove, Gold Coast, Australia while, in the ladies’ category, only the Winner was qualified to take part in the Asian Finals.
The awards were given away at a gala awards night held at the ‘Chaaya Blu’ Trincomalee on the same day. The Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal Harsha Abeywickrama, was present on the links to watch the golfers in action. He later joined DIMO Chairman, Mr. Ranjith Pandithage, on stage as the Chief Guest of the evening to give away the awards to the winners at the awards night. |
